Although both medicines help fight potential HIV infections, they are used in different circumstances:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>PrEP<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is taken <\/span><b>before, during, and after<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> situations presenting a high risk of HIV exposure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>PEP<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (post-exposure prophylaxis) is an emergency treatment taken <\/span><b>after<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a potential exposure, such as if you had unprotected sex or a condom broke.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Made from three medications, PEP must be started within 72 hours of the exposure and taken over a period of 28 consecutive days. It builds up in your bloodstream and tissues (like your rectum or vagina) and acts like a shield. If HIV enters your body, PrEP interferes with the virus\u2019s ability to make copies of itself. No replication means no infection.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t kill the virus, but it stops it from setting up shop in your system.
